Nowadays, the importance of power backup has gone through the roof with both commercial and domestic uses rising by leaps and bounds. This is where the role of diesel generators comes to the fore, as they are among the most reliable backup power options. However, maintaining diesel generators can be challenging. Nobody would like to see a malfunctioning diesel generator during power outages. At Leddy Power, located in Moorpark, CA, our team of professionals will share the top 5 signs your diesel generator needs immediate maintenance.
Top 5 Signs Displayed by a Standby Diesel Generator in Need of Maintenance
There are certain signs your diesel generator displays when it needs immediate maintenance. Here are the top 5 signs you need to pay attention to:
Problem in Starting
Your standby diesel generator should start instantly and smoothly when you need it to. If you experience problems starting your diesel generator, it indicates the need for immediate maintenance to address the underlying issues.
At times, diesel generator owners complain of hesitation at startup, cranking excessively without starting, or failing to start completely. Most of the time, the problem is caused by inadequate voltage from a failing battery or by a blocked fuel filter due to dirt and debris.
In addition, there might be issues with the glow plug, which often causes starting problems in diesel generators. In fact, the starter motor in your diesel generator also needs to be checked periodically, as issues with its functioning can also lead to starting problems.
Excessive Smoke Emission
Another leading sign that your diesel generator needs immediate maintenance is excess smoke coming from it. Generally, an efficient diesel generator transitions quickly to smooth operation, with little to no smoke from the exhaust.
However, if you notice excess smoke coming from your diesel generator’s exhaust after it starts up, it indicates underlying problems. Black smoke indicates a problem with the fuel, white smoke indicates a problem with the cooling system, and blue smoke indicates a problem with the lubrication system.
If you notice colored smoke from your diesel generator’s exhaust, contact Leddy Power, located near you in Moorpark, CA, to have your generator inspected by our professionals so the necessary maintenance can be performed.
Fluid Leaks
If you notice any visible fluid leaks around your diesel generator, take note of them immediately, as they indicate serious issues that need to be addressed. At times, it is noticed that engine oil, coolant, diesel fuel, and hydraulic fluid leak from your generator.
Most of the time, fluid leaks adversely affect your diesel generator’s performance, often leading to overheating, environmental pollution, and fuel waste. This indicates that your diesel generator needs immediate maintenance, which must never be neglected.
Warning Lights on Control Panel
Modern diesel generators are equipped with various warning lights and advanced control panels that monitor their operation. If you see an illuminated warning light or hear an alarm, it indicates that your diesel generator needs immediate service. Now, the reason for illuminating the warning light or alarm varies from model to model. However, all of these indicate that your generator needs maintenance.
Unusual Sounds
A properly maintained diesel generator will operate with a constant, predictable sound that is not too loud. However, if you come across any sudden or unusual noises, then you must get to the bottom of the matter. You might hear knocking, grinding, hissing, or screeching, indicating that something is wrong with the diesel generator. Now, if you tend to ignore these unusual noises, it can lead to a host of issues with your diesel engine’s functioning. You must get your diesel engine inspected by the professionals as soon as possible.
