AUTOMATIC TRANSFER SWITCHES
The Automatic Transfer Switch (ATS) is a critical component of every automatic emergency backup power system. The Automtic Transfer Switch detects when utility power is interrupted and signals a diesel or gaseous fueled power generator to start. Once the power generator reaches operating speed, typically within 5-10 seconds, the ATS transfers the building load from utility power to generator power. Once utility power is restored, the ATS re-transfers the building load back to utility power and initiates the generator cool-down and shut-off process. Without a ATS, an emergency backup power system would not be automatically functional.
